Balch

Below is my Balch family tree as it exists in my family file. Some of this information IS NOT sourced by me. This especially holds true of the children of John Balch and Nancy Basham. There is supposedly a Family Bible somewhere that states these are the names of their children, but I have not actually seen it. There is much circumstantial evidence supporting that Archibald, James W. and Samuel H. were brothers and that they were the sons of Archibald and Nancy. The other children are still a mystery to me, and I have no further information on them.

Kentucky Census, Reconstructed, 1790

In 1790, the area which was to become the state of Kentucky in 1792, lay within the state of Virginia. As a result, the 1790 Federal Census for Virginia contains records for residents of the soon to be created state of Kentucky. This collection is a reconstruction of what the census would have contained had Kentucky been a state. It was compiled from personal tax records now housed in the Kentucky State Historical Society. Each entry lists the name of the tax-payer, assumed to be the head of household who would have appeared in the 1790 Census, and the date of the tax record from which the information came.

" The last will and testament of John BALCH dec'd was produced in court and proven by the oath of Reuben BASSHAM one of the subscribing witnesses thereto and it appearing to the satisfaction of the court that since the executor of said will Jacob PENNYCUFF the other subscribing witness thereto hath departed this life, the handwriting and signature of the said Jacob PENNYCUFF was proven fully to the satisfaction of the court and the same will was thereupon ordered to be recorded and there being no executor appointed in said will, letters of administration on the estate of the said John BALCH was granted to Nancy BALCH with said will annexed, who was qualified to and gave security as the law directs to."
