My seventh great grandfather Joseph Gilbert first appears in Bucks Co., PA on a tax list for Bensalem in 1693. I've been unable to locate any earlier records for him in the county or on a ship's manifest indicating when he came to the colonies.
In 1702, he purchased land in Buckingham, Bucks Co. where he and his family apparently settled. In his will dated 1707, he had wife Deborah and children Thomas, Mary and Sarah. Deborah was Deborah Pearson, daughter of Edward Pearson and Sarah Burgess of Bucks Co. There is a record in the Falls Monthly Meeting Quaker records stating that Deborah was reported to have "married out of unity." The entry has a date of 1/2/1704, but I don't know if this is the actual marriage date to Joseph, or the date she was reported for her transgression.
Appearing in Bensalem in the same time frame as Joseph was a John Gilbert who came from Cornwall, England. Joseph was not John's son, but recent DNA testing has shown a likely descendant of John Gilbert's to be a match with two known descendants of Joseph Gilbert. There was a Joseph Gilbert born in 1670 in St. Neots, Cornwall who could possibly be my Joseph.
