Gilbert Genealogy Y-DNA Project

Thomas Gilbert of Braintree, MA Line

We have an interesting situation that has developed in the Braintree line.   We have fourteen participants of the project who descend from Thomas Gilbert of Braintree's two sons Thomas and Jonathan.  Their DNA all matches, and for awhile at least, it appeared we had established a solid baseline for the Braintree line.    Over the past couple of years, however, other participants joined the project who thought they descended from Thomas of Braintree's son Obadiah, but while they all matched each other, they did not match the descendants of Thomas' sons Thomas and Jonathan.   We thought we might have a problem in the Obadiah branch somewhere that caused the DNA to be altered.  By problem, I mean a non-paternity event...an adoption, illegitimacy, infidelity or name change...that caused the DNA of the line to not be reflective of the surname it carried.   Now, however, we have an even greater issue.  A descendant of Thomas of Braintree's son John has now been tested, and he also matches the DNA of the Obadiah descendants!  Assuming everyone's research is correct, we now have the descendants of sons Jonathan and Thomas with one type of DNA, and the descendants of sons Obadiah and John with another type. 

There are several possible explanations for why this has happened, not the least of which is faulty research, but there also could have been multiple non-paternity events.  There is no way of knowing right now, but my suggestion is that all lineages below be stringently reviewed to make sure there were no leaps of faith taken.  If there were leaps of faith taken, please let me know about them, and I'll note them.
