...................................................................20 Kit 111259 This participant's lineage reflects a descent from a very old Gilbert line whose roots can be concretely traced back to a Humphrey Gilbert who settled in Essex Co., MA in about the 1642 timeframe. The participant's grandfather did much of the initial research as he lived in Essex Co., but unfortunately some of it was lost over the years as it changed hands. His grandfather was confident that the Humphrey of Ipswich was the grandson of Sir Humphrey Gilbert, but at present, that connection is the subject of some controversy as no hard source for that connection can be cited. There is, however, a "soft source" that I've found. (See below.) In honor of his grandfather, we will consider this lineage to be accurate until proven otherwise. In all likelihood, this won't be settled until we get a known descendant of the Compton line tested. The soft source...
Topographical Dictionary of 2885 English Emigrants
to New England, 1620-1650 by Charles Edward Banks
Published: 1937 ISBN: 9780806300191 This "Dictionary" comprises genealogical records of nearly 3,000 emigrants, giving their English homes, names of ships in which they sailed, towns in which they settled in New England, and references to the printed or manuscript sources from which the information derived. In collecting data for this work, Col. Banks made seven visits to England, searching the records of nearly 2,000 parishes in order to connect the New England immigrants with their native parishes. Additional information is provided in a series of indexes: Index to Emigrants to New England; Index of the Wives and Children of the Emigrants; Index of Parishes; Index of Ships; and Index of Towns in New England.
Second, there are many entries with the simple
reference "Banks Mss." These refer to the English records collected by Banks
on his visits to England. These references must be handled with great care,
and should be used only as clues. They may represent nothing more than the
presence of the surname of the emigrant in a given parish.
