Kit 73082 and Kit 1911311. John Gilbert b. 1805 France or Canada d. 1845 Ohio or
Indiana Results:The DNA results of these two kits do NOT confirm a relationship
on the paternal line. Their Y-DNA is very different. Kit
73082 does, however, match a Chapman line on 36 of 37 markers which has caused
us to long suspect a non-paternity even in this participant's line.
The fact that his second cousin (Kit 191131) does not match him, further
supports this. His second cousin does, however, match a French
Canadian Guillemette line well which brings into play a possible name change. Notes from the Kit 73082 Researcher: Notes for John GILBERT John Gilbert was born between 1800 and 1810, per 1840 census of Ohio. This same census shows that John's wife was born between 1810 and 1820. Mercy, the daughter of James S. and Lucy Nutter was born about 1815. This person was John's wife. She was born in New Hampshire, as were both of her parents, James S. and Lucy. John met Mercy at Lockport NY. They were married there. John died about 1845, at a young age. 1830 Census: Eli Gilbert is living near James S. Nutter in Niagara Co, New York. Probably of no interest to this relationship. Toss after finding John's real line. 1840 Census: John is living near James S. Nutter, both in the city limits of Dresden, Muskingum Co, Ohio. John age 30 to 40. Wife age 20 to 30. Two boys under age 5 match the ages for Ben and James. One might conjecture that John worked on the Erie Canal when he and his father-in-law lived in Lockport NY. Then worked on the Ohio canal when they lived near each other in Dresden OH. The time-frames for the construction of these canals matches this postulation. 1850 Census: James S. Nutter has moved to Indiana, with the children of John Gilbert: Ben, James, John, and Frances. Apparently, both John and Mercy have died in this past decade. 1900: Census of Blandville KY. Ben responded that his father, John, was born in France. In an earlier census (1880), Ben listed Canada as John’s birthplace. It is suggested that John came from France through Canada, and then to Niagara Falls/Lockport. However, there may have been prejudices against either Canada or France that colored Ben’s census responses. Need research.
