Thoughts about Webster, Samuel, and John Gilbert

1820 Robertson Co., Tennessee

Webster has either 5 or 6 sons and 2 daughters.  Depends on whether Samuel was counted twice.  Explained below.

1 male under 10

1 male – 10 and under 16 = John who would have been 14

2 males – 16 to 18 = one would be Samuel (age 16) and the other ??

2 males – 16 and under 26 – Was Samuel included in this count also?

1 male 26 and under 45  = should be Webster but he should have been 50-51

1 female – 1 to 10

1 female – 10 and under 16

1 female – 26 and under 45 = should be Susannah but she would have been 47

1 female slave 14 to 26

1830 Robertson Co., Tennessee

Webster now has 3 sons and 2 daughters.  John married in 1827 and has left the home.

1 male – under 5  ???

1 male – 15 and under 20   ??

1 male – 20 and under 30 = Samuel who would have been 26

1 male – 50 and under 60 = should be Webster but he would have been 60 – 61

          but close in age

1 female 10 and under 15

1 female – 20 and under 30

1 female  - 40 and under 50 should be Susannah but wrong age s/b 57

In the 1830 Robertson Co., Tennessee census   John Gilbert is found (M19, 179, 414).  He is some distance from his family.  Census states:

John Gilbert

1 male under 6 which would have been William Daniel

1 male – 20 to 30 which would have been John age 24

1 female – 20 to 30 which would have been Margaret age 20

1840 Robertson Co., Tennessee

Webster has 1 daughter at home  Listed on line 18

1 male – 60 and under 70  = Webster age 70

1 female  - 20 and under 30 - corresponds to 1830 census

1 female – 60 and under 70 = Susannah age 67

All ages agree on this census

Samuel is found on same page on line 12

1 male - under 5 = William Webster

1 male – 5 and under 10 = John W.

1 male – 30 and under 40 = Samuel age 36

1 female – 15 and under 20 – should be Charlotte (Lottie) but age is off – s/b 23

1840 Simpson Co., Kentucky

John Gilbert moved to Kentucky and has 3 sons and 2 daughters

2 males – 5 and under 10 = Thomas age 8 and James R. age 6

1 male – 10 and under 15 = William Daniel age 10 or 11

1 male – 30 and under 40 = John Gilbert age 34

2 females – under 5 = Mary age 4 and Susan age 1

1 female – 30 to 40 = Margaret age 30

All agree on sex and ages

Also found David Cooper whom I believe is Margaret’s father living next door to John Gilbert in 1840 Simpson County, Kentucky.  I also found him in Robertson County, Tennessee in the 1830 census one page before Webster.  I found him also in the 1820 Tennessee census.  This might explain the J.E. Cooper in the 1850 census.  J.E. could likely be the sister of Margaret.

1850 Simpson County, Kentucky

Both John and Samuel on found on this census right next door to each other.  John has real estate valued at 1700 and Samuel has none which leads me to believe that Samuel is helping John on his farm.

John Gilbert 42

Margaret 39  ( looks like a P for her name)

William 19

Thomas 17

James R 15

M   14

Susan 12

Isaac 9

J E Cooper 17

Webster Payton 18

Ages for all is correct or off by just one year

Samuel Gilbert moved to Kentucky after the death of his parents

Samuel 46

Lottie 33

J.W. 15

Samuel N 7

William 10

These ages are all correct – especially Lottie!  Honesty at last!

I.                   My Samuel Gilbert was born March 27, 1804 and died Sept. 3, 1873.  These dates are from his tombstone in Norris Cemetery in St. Clair County, Missouri.  Based on these dates, my Samuel seems to work in the censuses above.

II.                Simpson County Bios lists Thomas Gilbert as the son of John Gilbert.  The bio goes on to say that the father of John Gilbert was Webster Gilbert.

III.             Why would Samuel go to Kentucky after his parents death?  Because his brother John had settled there.  He also lived next door to John for a few years. Samuel left Kentucky abt. 1851 or 1852 based on his son’s death certificate.  His son John W. died in 1886 and had been a resident of Missouri for 34 years prior to his death.  That makes the date of their arrival in Missouri about 1852.  The longest period that Samuel lived in Kentucky would have been about 7 years.

IV.            I believe that these 2 brothers were close as Samuel named his first born – John.  John, Samuel’s brother, had married and moved some distance away from his birth place.  Perhaps Samuel named his first born John for his brother John.  His other sons were William Webster after his older brother and father? And then Samuel N for him – Samuel.  This is supposition though.

V.               Only have the 1820 census where John and my Samuel would have been listed together as John married in 1827.  But their ages work in the 1820 census for Webster Gilbert.

VI.            Based on DNA tests, both John and Samuel are descended from Garvis Gilbert.

VII.         There is no hard proof – just supposition.
