Schneider DNA (Y-DNA) Project |

*** Due to the difficulties in detecting matches from multiple test companies and the growing number of people being tested, I'm abandoning this external project website's results table. The individual testing company project websites will now be used. Family Tree DNA offers the best utilities for this purpose, so they are my preferred company as of right now. **** SchneiderAbout the ProjectThe Schneider Y-DNA Project is open to anyone who can contribute DNA from a male carrying the Schneider name and their variants. You can join the project with a specific goal in mind such as connecting with one of the currently tested lines, or just to have your results available for a possible future match. The project administrators will be here to assist you with the interpretation of your results as necessary. Important: A requirement of being approved to join the project at Family Tree DNA is that you provide your paternal Schneider lineage as best you know it. It need not be comprehensive, complete or extensive, just as much as you know so your line can be identified. You may either submit your lineage at the time your request to join the project at Family Tree DNA, or you may e-mail it to me ahead of time. If for whatever reason you do not wish to provide your lineage, you can always be tested via Family Tree DNA independent from a project. (For more info, see the Lineage Requirement FAQ.) What Does Testing Involve and How Much Does It Cost?DNA is contributed by the donor scraping the inside of their mouth with either a swab or small brush as provided by the test lab. It does not hurt, and there is no blood involved. If the donor is not the person paying for the test, they can be completely anonymous to the test lab if desired. The cost of the testing varies based on the number of DNA markers ordered. I recommend the 37 marker test from Family Tree DNA which costs $149 + s/h. Fewer makers could likely lead to ambiguous results depending on the nature of your DNA. Join the Project! Please click here to request to join the Schneider and variants Y-DNA project at Family Tree DNA. Again, you may either provide your lineage at the time you make this request or you may e-mail it to me before submitting this request. All I see on the results page is gobbledy-gook numbers! I don't get it.The DNA results you get back from the lab will consist of two pieces of information: your predicted "haplogroup" and a string of numbers. Your haplogroup is kind of an anthropological grouping that will give you an idea where your Schneider ancestral line came from thousands of years ago. The string of numbers is what we use to determine family relationships. What we look for is participants whose values for the 37 markers match on at least 34 of the 37 markers. This is not a hard and fast rule, though.
