Local Diving Information

Tricount prides itself in taking advantage of numerous local diving opportunities.

Susquehanna River/Chesapeake Bay

The Susquehanna River and Chesapeake Bay offer wonderful diving if you're of the mindset to enjoy them.  It certainly isn't for everyone, but Tricount divers feel fortunate to have river and bay diving in our backyards.  Visibility is of course limited and can vary between 0 and 10 feet.  More than not, you can expect about 3 to 4 foot visibility on the bottom.   Lights are a must regardless of the depth.

So what do you see in the bay and river?  Well, that depends on where you are and how lucky you are.  From a creature standpoint, you can see catfish, rockfish, eels, oysters and if you're really lucky, blue crabs.   From a man-made "treasure" standpoint, you can find sunken boats, boat trailers, ten speed bikes, old bottles, and the ever-present lost boat anchor.  Some local divers have even been fortunate enough to find antique B&O railroad dishes thrown out the windows as trains crossed the bridge over the river.

Regarding depth, there is no reason to go deep.  It gets very dark very quickly in both bodies of water.  When doing scavenging dives, 8 to 25 feet would be the norm.   That translates to lots of bottom time! During the hotter summer months,  you can dive in just a skin or bathing suit.   Other times of the year will require a wet suit or dry suit depending on the season.

When doing a river or bay dive, it's best to hit it at high tide.  Below is a link to tide information for dive planning purposes.

Quarries and Lakes

In addition to the river and bay, there are numerous quarries and lakes within reasonable driving distance that cater to divers.

Below are just some of the facilities in reasonable proximity:

Guppy Gulch Quarry - Delta, PA

Willow Springs Quarry and Park - Richland, PA

Bainbridge Quarry - Bainbridge, PA

Dutch Springs Quarry - Bethlehem, PA

Lake Rawlings Scuba and Camping Park - Rawlings, VA

Ocean Diving

And of course having the Atlantic Ocean within a few hours is an added bonus.  There are numerous wrecks off the MD, DE, NJ, VA and NC coasts that provide a well-stocked playground for divers.   Tricount organizes ocean dives from spring through fall that are open to all members and then to non-members as space permits.

Here are some Mid-Atlantic dive operations through which you can book ocean dives:
